Citizen Card - proof of age for everyone

We are a responsible local grocer. As a community-based retailer we take our responsibilities regarding the sale of alcohol and cigarettes very seriously. We operate a 'Under 21 Rule' - where staff are encouraged to ask for identification for anyone buying alcohol or cigarettes who doesn't look at least 21 years of age. We have a comprehensive training programme for our store, from induction through to regular twelve weekly training sessions. We also have till check prompts when alcohol or cigarettes are scanned and a refusal register to log when any customer is refused alcohol or cigarettes. Stores are audited regularly to ensure that they are complying with our procedures over the sale of age-related products. The Citizen Card lets cardholders prove eligibility to buy discounted travel tickets, board aircraft for domestic flights and it has many other uses as well.

• at age 18: fireworks, solvents, lighter fuel, videos and 18 certificate DVDs and entry to casinos and betting shops

• at age 16: knives, razorblades, sparklers, party poppers and caps, liqueur chocolates and petrol. You can get a CitizenCard at any age.

How do you get a CitizenCard?

The easiest way to apply is to pick up an application form at any Somerfield Store, usually at the tobacco counter, or you can apply online at www.citizencard.com. For adults cards cost just £7 and for under-18s the cards are completely free of charge. Applications normally take up to three weeks to process, but if you need your card within 5 days you can pay an extra £10 to guarantee your card is fast-tracked.
